Alabama is home to Mercedes-Benz, Honda, and Hyundai assembly plants.  Others have also chosen Alabama to build their engines, including International Diesel, which produces advanced technology diesel engines in Huntsville.  Today in Alabama, there are over 300 automotive related companies --- 286% increase since 1991.
 

ALABAMA’S AUTOMOTIVE MILESTONES
1991: Alabama had 86 automotive related companies
 
1993: Mercedes selected Vance, Alabama (Near Tuscaloosa), as the production location of the new M-Class
 
1998:
68,800 units were produced by Mercedes – Its first full year of production
 
1999: Honda chooses Lincoln, Alabama (Near Talladega) as the production site to build the Honda Odyssey minivan and engines
 
2000:
Mercedes expands
 
2001:
Honda increases production – adds second assembly line 
2001: Toyota Motor Corporation announced it would produce 120,000 V-8 engines in Huntsville
 
2002: Hyundai selects Montgomery as the home for its first US automotive manufacturing facility
 
2002:
Mercedes announces the Grand Sports Tourer will be produced at the Vance, AL plant
 
2003: Honda consolidates all North American Odyssey production to Alabama and the second assembly line will now make the Honda Pilot
 
2004: Toyota expands – facility will now produce V-8 engines to meet all of its North American needs
 
2005: Combined production capacity at Mercedes, Honda, and Hyundai reaches 760,000 units per year
